Sony Xperia Z2 Mustering Hands On

Sony Xperia Z2- Sonys latest flagship phone- was introduced to the world at the MWC 2014. Xperia Z2s unveiling was overshadowed by the excitement and disappointment created by the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S5. Like the S5, Xperia Z2 is not a whole new range of phone, rather a slight upgrade to its predecessor Z1. Z2 follows the same blueprint of Z1 in almost every aspect. The 5.2inch IPS LCD display is the most notable change in Z2. Xperia Z2 sports a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM, 3200mAh battery, 20.7MP camera; all stuffed inside the stunning rectangular glass body.

BUILD / DESIGN

The Xperia Z2 is based on the blueprints of its predecessors- Sonys OmniBalance design. Just like Xperia Z1, Z2 looks like a rectangular glass slab cut in perfection- with the smooth and buttonless front, glass panel covering its entire back and all held together by a silver-coloured aluminium frame.

Z2 has got a slightly larger 5.2inch display, but slimmer bezels kept its size almost same. Xperia Z2 measures 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm and weighs 163g, While the dimensions of Z1 is 144 x 74 x 8.5 mm and it weighed 170g. Well, its a big phone; the Z series always has been- except for the stunning Z1 Compact. This is a rectangle cut phone, but its edges are actually curvy to give it a less severe feel in the hand. Still, its a big phone for small hands!

Like its predecessors, the Z2 is completely both water and dust proof. You can submerse it in up to 1 metre (3.3 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes. The waterproof and dustproof special powers lets you the camera underwater, using the camera shutter button- as the touch screen wont work underwater. Another impressive feature in Xperia Z2 is the build-in digital noise cancelling. This feature has more features packed within it; but sadly, noise-cancelling wont work to full effect with other headphones other than those provided.

DISPLAY

DISPLAY? Display is one of the best feature of this device. Xperia Z2 sports a 5.2-inch full-HD IPS LCD display. It has the same 1080 x 1920 pixels of Z1, but a slightly bigger screen- which reduced its pixel density from 441ppi to 424ppi. Still, the display is pin sharp and delivers much stronger performance than Xperia Z1.

Sony switched to an IPS panel, which offers significantly improved multi-angle viewing. The display uses the same Triluminos and X-Reality technologies from its Bravia TVs, making it more vivid. Xperia Z2 also features Live Colour LED technology, which is designed to boost the colour range of the screen and it does really helps to make everything look more natural with great colour reproduction.

SOFTWARE / INTERFACE

Xperia Z2 runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat, skinned with Sonys own UI. Though its good to hear that Android KitKat is there, but Sonys Android skin doesnt seem to impress everyone. Theres a lot of cool features, and some I dont know for-what features.

Sony has done its usual software tweaks, like a customisable app menu and notification panel. It also comes pre-loaded with PlayStation Mobile store, Music and Video services and other usual apps.Sony has also packed some features inspired from its competitors like Smart Backlight Control (aka Samsungs Smart Stay) and double tap to wake the phone (LGs Knock On). There are a lot of other features that Sony has included to impress with the Xperia Z2, like the internal noise cancellation with different environment modes and the extended camera app. The widgets and gimmicky 3D animations doesnt seem to work out their purpose- to impress!

CAMERA

Speaking of camera, Xperia Z2 sports the same 20.7MP camera featured on both the Z1 and the Z1 Compact. The snaps with the back camera impressed the first reviewers and seems to be a slight improvement over the Z1s. Maybe its the excellent display performance of the device that led to this first impression.

What Sony highlights as a big upgrade to the camera is the 4K video capture- which I agree with the majority- is a gimmick. Well, 4K video capture feature is something big. But, it wont fit into something commonly available- not even the Z2 that captures it. Although a full HD resolution device is a commoner, something that supports a 4K resolution is not. You will need a 4K TV like Sony KD-65X9005A, to view and fully appreciate the video you took.

Well, Sony sticked with the same Exmor RS sensor and Bionz for mobile image processor. However, Z2 does have some new and upgraded features, like the SteadyShot image stabilisation that could reduce visible camera shake when shooting video. The camera app is upgraded with more features like a background defocus tool, Timeshift video that allows you to shoot video at 120fps in HD 720p and more creative effects.

But, the camera is a bit slow, compared to the Z1s. It took a few more seconds to respond- both while taking the snap and while opening-up.

MEMORY

Xperia Z2 comes with a 16GB internal storage and 3GB RAM. Memory can be expanded upto 64GB, using a microSD card.

BATTERY

Sony packed Xperia Z2 with an upgraded Li-Ion 3200mAh battery. The non-removable battery has little more juice in it than that in the Z1. Lets hope that it provides sufficient battery life for the Z2. Sony in the spec sheet describes the average battery life of Z2 as:
Talk time: up to 19 hrs
Standby time: up to 740 hrs
Music listening time: Up to 120 hrs
Video playback time: Up to 10 hrs

PERFORMANCE

Sony Xperia Z2 is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, backed up by 3GB of RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. Z2 isnt a big upgrade over the Z1 which features a 2.2GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. It seems to work smoothly and there was no noticeable lag when navigating around the onscreen menus. But, the camera was a bit slow compared to Z1.
