Repost GT72 2QE The Most Dominate Ever!
Since the GT72 2PE came to the market, I came to realize that MSI
are pushing its gaming machine to the limit.
Long time I�ve been waiting for such laptop with good design
but cost are friendlier � Which allows me to upgrade it and have more fun
GT72 2QE Dominator Pro is just the laptop I�m looking for.
Light enough (3.7KG only! ) and still super powerful.
The only one thing I couldn�t understand is why MSI don�t take a
little time and launch with GTX 900M Maxwell. Anyway� It�s worthy
that I didn�t have enough budget at August when 2PE launched.
GT72 2QE looks exactly the same as its predecessor, so I guess
I don�t need to spend too much words introducing how it looks like.

Left side I/O. 4 USB 3.0 port and audio ports. Also, the SDXC slot
Right side I/O. USB 3.0 port x2 , total 6 USB 3.0 port, more than all other laptop.
BD writer also at right side. It�s a 9.5mm height slim one, if you want to make
some DIY, be careful don�t buy a wrong size ODD to HDD adapter.
Rear side I/O. mini DP x 2 and HDMI x 1. Killer Lan port also at rear side.
It�s quite smart to put all these port at rear side that won�t make my desk a mess.
MY all-time favorite : multi-color KB made by Steelseries !!! It�s the best
laptop keyboard ever although still can�t compete with my cherry brown switch mechanical keyboard.
But, I must say that it�s the best laptop keyboard. Along with MSI�s Steelseries Engine,
which make it very easy to set up the macro key, you don�t need to use external keyboard.
The Dynaudio speaker, its volume is totally out of my expectation.
Finally I don�t need to bring an extra speaker when going out �

Traditional touch pad with 2 buttons. I must say that I can�t get used
to the apple-like clickpad, thank god MSI don�t put the clickpad on GT72
Another interesting part about GT72 from other laptops like my
ASUS ROG G750, I must say it�s you could change the color of the
led, which is already a normal feature on Alienware.
Unfortunately, I still can�t change the color of light of MSI logo. Otherwise it will be perfect.

GT72 looks a bit cute compare to the large G750. G750�s size is quite
large anb inconvenient if sometimes you need to carry it around.

Dynaudio Sub-woofer, also improved, from 3W to 5W
It�s not hard to take the bottom case apart, I think it�s always a strength
of MSI models. You don�t need to take too much time if you just want to clean its fan.
Fan size also looks quite big � I think these 2 fans really contribute a lot to GT72�s good thermal performance.
Only need to remove 2 screws you can take out the fan
And, I guess the small card is Killer WLAN card ?!

The second part of my �small review� is the performance about GTX 980M
and its 1TB super RAID SSD. I think I�m not the first one who bought this
machine, but here I found some interesting part of GT72 2QE with GTX 980M
that GT72 2PE with GTX 880M don�t have
First, I check the standard performance of GTX 980M and i7 4980HQ
The Cinebench mark score 7.15~7.23. I would say it�s normal, not outstanding as its model name 4�9�xx.
But after checking 3DMark 11 score, the performance is still much better than a 4�7�xx processor.
Default GPU clock is 1038 MHz and allow auto over-clocking to 1127 MHz
as long as your laptop thermal can bare the heat and not to hit the critical temperature
3DMARK 11 P score 11666, Graphic score 12792. If you�re familiar with
the graphic card score, this score is almost the same as desktop graphic GTX 780
Physics score 9103. 4700HQ on my G750JH scores around 7500 only

Lost planet 2 test 110.5fps in highest graphic setting
FF XIV score 12612 in highest setting
Stalker in highest setting.
Max FPS 105.6 and average all above 75 in all 4 themes
That�s play with some over clocking �
After testing a few times, I found this machine is stable with CPU
core over clock 110MHz and memory over clock to 5200MHz (1300MHz x 4)
After over clocking, 3DMARK 11 P score more than 12000 and
graphic score boost up to 13294, around 4% higher
New 3DMARK Fire strike score 8783, graphic score 10131, 7.5% better after O.C.
RE6 score 12475, 5.73% better
Lost planet 2 score 123.3 fps, 12% boost up!
FF XIV score 13172, 4% better.
STALKER, average 5% better after O.C.
After all those testing, I found that almost all scores match with what NVIDIA claims: 20% less than desktop GTX 980. GTX 980M�s performance is the same as GTX 780, only that GTX 780 get better over clocking performance. But, it�s a desktop graphic, it�s more easily to tweak the desktop graphic because we can�t tweak the laptop graphic voltage. I think if MSI could let us tweak the voltage, it will be more fun.
The �Shift� feature is what I mentioned the �interesting part�.
There are 3 mode, first is sport mode, I guess that MSI doesn�t constrain the performance because the test result above is the same as what I saw on media review.
To switch between the 3 modes, just press fn+F7
The second one is �Comfort mode�, you�ll find the performance drop a little, about 15% drop and it�s still better than GTX 970M , but the noise and the air temperature from the exhaust also cool down a bit.
3DMARK 11 P Graphic score 19% less when using green mode.
The new 3DMARK fire strike graphic score 7939, 16% drop
RE6 scorers 10924 in comfort mode, drop around 14%
Lost planet 2, drop around 7%
FF XIV, drop around 6% only.
STALKER, drop around 16%
The last one is �Green mode�. In the green mode, I found the performance
drop around 20% make the it almost the same as GTX 970M.
To compensate, fans almost don�t make noise even when play games on
GT72 and the air temperature can�t even warm you in a cold winter.

RE6 score 10401 points
LP 2 score 99.1 fps, still very high.
FF XIV, performance still extremely high as the benchmark software says.
STALKER, average above 60 FPS and min FPS around 42. It�s quite playable.
Why I think �Shift� is interesting? Unlike the over-clock tweaking,
MSI make the laptop cooler when you don�t need a very good performance to play the game.
For example, if you�re playing some old titles or some casual games,
you really don�t need 150 or even 200 FPS.
Actually we could easily found that some laptop brands tweaking down
the NVIDIA core clocks so make the laptop cooler.
People look at the temperature tested and say which one is cooler which
one is not but ignore the small difference which GPU or CPU throttling bring to us.
MSI just did it for us, although I don�t know how they did it, the difference
between MSI GT72 and other laptops is that it�s you control the machine but
not forced to bare the less-performance laptop.
Finally, that�s take a look at the SSD.
There are 4 256GB SSD combined by RAID 0. The Kingston 256GB M.2 use
Phison PS3108 controller, which is rarely seen in the market but Kingston seems to love use it.
Tested by 3 software, the sequential read is around 1400MB/s and sequential Write around 1100MB/s.
Although we could easily divide those numbers by 4, which means a single
SSD�s performance is 350MB/s and 250MB/s, but we all know it�s not that easy.

By comparing the Kingston V310 that also use PS3108, this controller can score 450MB/s on sequential read when data is incompressible and more than 500MB/s when data is compressible. So I think the performance loss of RAID is quite huge.
The interesting part of this controller Phison compress the data when writing. Which is same as Sandforce SF2281. It�s to reduce the data writing times to protect the NAND flash. But they doesn�t do the data compress for reading, I guess it�s because the NAND flash now days is weak at writing times but not reading, so you don�t need to put constrain to reading but you should consider the writing times.
Total boost time is 30.5 seconds.
But it only take about 7 seconds after you start the machine, you could start to use it.
There are still many advantage that I didn�t mention about GT72 2QE, but besides the GTX 900M and shift feature, it�s almost the same as GT72 2PE. For example, Steelseries Keyboard, Steelseries Engine and gamecaster MSI just put into their laptop since this year.
All those advantages contribute a bit to the reason why I bought GT72
because I see MSI is really dedicated to the gaming laptop.
